With ever increasing patients in every hospitals and clinique, the doctors demand that records be in a computer, which they can access than paper. The computer-based medical record system is slowly but steadily making itself as a sole way of record keeping and is replacing the old paper medical records used for more than couple of centuries.
These electronic medical records, also called electronic health records are better in various ways like going green without paper and could save lives! How you ask, well a 1999 the Institute of Medicine report estimated that as many as 98,000 medical-error-related deaths occur each year in United States. A significant share of those errors is caused by poor medical recording or errors in retrieving what is written by health care personnel, including doctors, pharmacists, nurses and laboratory staff.
Thankfully computers are doing the job of finding the error of diagnosis as well with the help of software. As Stephen Persell, M.D., assistant professor of medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, and lead author of a study of the software said "It helps us find needles in the haystack and focus on patients who really have outstanding needs that may have slipped between the cracks.”
PC for health records is way better than paper and has a lot of advantages. I hope that all the hospitals could start implementing this system as soon possible, that way I don’t have remember how I felt the last time I was sick or what medication I am taking to write couple of times in a sheet, before even I can get into the doc’s office.
