Burial - Untrue Review

300 word minimum version:

Burial is a dubstep artist, and an interesting guy, shrouded entirely in mystery. As far as fans and the internet are concerned, his real name is William Bevan, and he lives in London. Beyond that, no one knows anything about him.

In 2007, Burial released his second album, Untrue. All I can say is, an album has never evoked such strong emotions. His rhythms are rough and dynamic, as opposed to rigid and mechanistic, which is the state that drum'n'bass' is in.

The album has two different types of song, there's the original dubstep songs, and then there are more ambient pieces interspersed amongst these other tracks. "Archangel," the hit song from Untrue reached critical acclaim in the UK upon its release. The beat is original, the vocals are haunting, and overall, you're left feeling like "a ghost touched your heart." Other notable songs similar in style to "Archangel" include: "Ghost Hardware," "Etched Headplate," and "Untrue."

Onto the more ambient songs. "Endorphin" is the best ambient song on the album. It portrays the feeling that Burial intended for the album. In an interview with Wire Magazine, he said that he intended to make a "half euphoric record," and he succeeded entirely. As well as creating a euphoric feeling, he also wanted to make an album about South London, and in particular, the feeling you'd get when walking through the streets of London at night after dancing in a club until 4AM. The two songs, "UK" and "Raver" capture this idea flawlessly.

Sadly, but that I am a complete music snob, and pride myself on being a judgmental asshole when it comes to records,  I'm not able to find any downfalls in this album, every song is pure gold in its own way. I would highly recommend this album to anyone, regardless of their taste in music.
