Homicide: A Year On The Killing Streets
David Simon
Over the course of David Simon's Homicide, Detective Tom Pellegrini must try to hold onto his own sanity whilst investigating the utterly insane murder of 11- year old LaTonya Wallace. This is just one of the stories that Simon presents to us. In his time embedded with the Baltimore City Homicide Division Simon's witnesses a great deal of crude and blunt behavior on the part of the "murder police" as they descend into alcoholism, gambling, adultery, and abuse.
But as Detective Tom Pellegrini agonizes over his inability to locate LaTonya Wallace's murder and obsesses about every detail of the case to the point that he nearly dies out of exhaustion, we have come to realize something. That in his profiling of these detectives, Simon has managed to reveal something: these are still only men and we cannot expect any more of them.
